Early Language Support for Every Child (ELSEC)

At Maidenhall, we are proud to be part of the Early Language Support for Every Child (ELSEC) programme, which is founded and supported by the NHS.

ELSEC focuses on developing children’s speech, language, and communication skills, helping them to thrive both in school and beyond. The programme has been running at Maidenhall since September 2024, with a particular focus on our Reception Year pupils.

Why does early language matter?

Strong early language skills are vital for learning, making friends, and feeling confident.
Children who develop good communication skills at a young age are more likely to do well at school and build positive relationships. Supporting language development- both, at home, and in school- gives every child the best possible start.

How does ELSEC work at Maidenhall?

During the Autumn 1 term, every child in Reception has their speech and language skills assessed by an ELSEC trained speech and language support practitioner who works regularly in our school. All children receive support to help them build their communication skills, but some may benefit from a little extra help.

This might involve taking part in small, fun group activities designed to “boost” language development. These groups can help children with:

  • Expanding their vocabulary
  • Improving understanding
  • Building longer sentences
  • Learning to tell stories more clearly

Taking part in these groups does not necessarily mean a child has speech or language difficulty- it’s simply an opportunity to give their language a helpful boost.

Further support

In some cases, if a child may need more targeted help, it might be recommended. This would always be discussed with parents and the school before any next steps are taken.
